Meet Your Vice Chief Preston Marquis

Scouting is more than just a hobby for Preston Marquis, our national vice chief; it is a way of life. Preston starting in Scouting at an early age and has stuck with it all this time. When asked what led him to the Scouting movement, he replied, “I was impressed by the programs that were offered and wanted to become more familiar with outdoor and camping skills. I also thought the uniforms were cool.”

When it came to involvement in the Order of the Arrow, it was more of an accident. He had been in the OA just about two months when his lodge elections were held. Preston thought that he would run for a lodge office but figured someone would likely run against him and beat him. To his surprise he was elected and served as lodge chief of the Blue Heron Lodge for two years!

After his terms as lodge chief, he wanted to serve in a different position. At conclave he took advantage of the opportunity to run for section chief, and won. Later, during his second term as section chief, his peers elected him national vice chief.

Preston is also involved in many activities outside of Scouting, including activities in his high school. Preston plays the trumpet, plays tennis, and runs cross-country to help occupy his time when he’s not busy with Scouting. He plans to continue his education at Georgetown University with a degree in international politics.

Preston appreciates the example set by his role model, Bill Gates – particularly his commitment to public service. Preston would like to challenge everyone to commit to public service inside and outside of Scouting.

“On a personal note, I’d consider many of my Scouting advisers excellent role models as well,” said Preston. “I truly have been pleased with the privilege to work with some outstanding men and women over the past several years and I’ve learned much from each of them.”
