The Legacy Project tent showcases each lodge’s history

Introduced at NOAC 2012, the Legacy Project invited each lodge to complete four challenges by this year:
- Lodge rock
- Legacy lid
- History book
- Centennial fire
At the 2012 National Order of the Arrow Conference, lodges were given a crate to collect the required items and bring them to NOAC 2015. In addition, the crate was to be filled with kiln dried wood to be used in the ceremonial Centennial fire, with each lodge receiving a vial of ash afterwards. Located at The Hub during NOAC 2015, the Legacy Tent featured each lodge’s rock, lid and history book.
Legacy rocks
The first challenge of the project was to find a rock from the council’s territory or camp and engrave it with the lodge name and location. The rocks were part of each lodge’s Legacy Display during NOAC and came in a wide variety of colors, shapes, and sizes showing the diversity of each lodge.
After the conference, the rocks will be transported to the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia to be incorporated into the Summit Circle. Once the rocks arrive at the Summit, they will be included with rocks from Treasure Island to form the base and walls of the National OA Ceremony Ring.
Rocks for lodges no longer in existence formed a separate display around a Centennial Fire in the Legacy Tent and will also find a future home at the Summit Circle.
Legacy lids and history books
With each rock at the lodge displays were decorated centennial crate lids and lodge history books. The lids incorporated the lodge’s legacy with a variety of themes. Some showed carved or painted versions of the lodge’s NOAC contingent flap while others showed historical lodge flaps or scenes from the lodge’s territory.
Possibly the most time consuming challenge was compiling a lodge history book, and there was a wide variation in the types of information lodges presented. Common themes were histories of predecessor lodges, lists of past lodge officers and Vigil members, historical newsletters, award recipients for lodge and national awards, and information about regular lodge events. These books were amazing to see on display at NOAC and will be a lodge’s treasured item for years and decades to come.
