UT President's Message to NOAC Participants

University of Tennessee President

Dear Arrowmen,

The University of Tennessee is delighted to host the National Order of the Arrow Conference and to welcome you all to campus.

You might want to know a few facts about the University of Tennessee:

The university extends far beyond the campus in Knoxville. We have a Health Science Center in Memphis, two other undergraduate campuses, and a statewide network of extension personnel serving agriculture, governments and business.

Throughout the university system, we enroll about 42,000 students; our statewide budget totals some $890 million.

We are particularly proud to have recently been selected to manage, with Battelle Memorial Institute, the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Very few universities manage national labs, and we believe that the possibilities to improve our research programs and to enhance the economic health of the region are virtually endless with this new role.

We hope you will take time to explore and take advantage of our museums and recreation facilities. We think you will find UT people friendly and helpful as you tour around campus.

You are undoubtedly aware of the fine reputation the university enjoys in intercollegiate athletics- particularly our Lady Vol basketball program, which has produced six national championship teams, and the Volunteer football team, with two national titles to its credit. We invite you to look beyond the university's athletic reputation and discover the fine academic institution that is a vital part of the state of Tennessee.

Again, we welcome you to the University of Tennessee and wish you a pleasant stay.

Dr. J. Wade Gilley
President
University of Tennessee
