PREPARING FOR NOAC: WHAT TO EXPECT ON DAY 1
As many of you load buses, plains, and cars to head to NOAC, the NOAC staff will already be hard at work setting up the many program areas at the event. When your contingent arrives, the contingent leader and the lodge chief should report to the Assembly Hall on the north side of campus. The rest of the contingent should remain in your bus or your vehicles. This is a good time to clean up everything and prepare to move into your room for the week. After your lodge is checked in, head over to your Region’s Orientation area, where your Region Chief will be waiting to go over the basics of conference life. Afterwards, you will be able to move into your room for the week. As unloading areas will be crowded, you should move any vehicles to either long-term parking or you should purchase a parking pass for the week and move to your parking as soon as you are unloaded. Use the rest of the day to explore campus, settle into your room, and take advantage of some of the Day 1 events that will be in your schedule on campus. After dinner there will be an Opening Show, which you will surely not want to miss. From there, the conference is yours for the making. |

PREPARING FOR NOAC: WHAT TO BRING TO THE CONFERENCE
A full packing list is available on the NOAC website at http://event.oa-bsa.org/events/n2009/arrowmen_pack.htm, but you will want to make sure to have at least one full Scout uniform, including Scout shorts, socks, and a belt. Don’t forget to pack your OA sash as well. This is also the uniform for traveling to NOAC, so it should be easy to remember to bring. Each participant is encouraged to also bring one or more blank t-shirts for Founder’s Day. An opportunity to have your shirts silkscreen printed is planned as an attraction at the Founder’s Day Fair. Screen prints will be available in red and white inks, so bring shirts accordingly. Indiana University will provide 2 sheets, a blanket, a pillow, and 2 towels for each participant. Many rooms do not have air conditioning, so you are encouraged to bring a small fan to keep cool while in your room. You will typically not be in your room during the hottest part of the day because of the abundant activities available, so the fan is mostly for at night while you are sleeping. Also remember to bring a small radio so that you can listen to the NOAC radio station, broadcasting live straight from NOAC. The best way to stay on top of Conference news, emergency announcements and to play contests is to listen to the Power of One Radio, streaming live at the conference. Don’t forget to pack your radio! |

PREPARING FOR NOAC: WIRELESS INTERNET USAGE WHILE AT NOAC
In order to use the guest wireless network at Indiana University, you need a Network Access Account. All NOAC participants and staff will be given an IU Network Access Account during registration. Wireless access is available in most public places such as dorm lounges, the library, cafeterias, and the Memorial Union. Limited access may be available in some dorm room areas and classrooms. Outdoor wireless is not provided. By using a Network Access Account you are agreeing to abide by all the policies regarding computer usage of Indiana University. These accounts are designed to provide you with access to the internet and will not allow access to IU facilities such as printers and servers. Network connectivity and access is monitored and violations of IU policy will result in access being cut-off. NOAC attendees should make sure their computers have the firewall activated and anti-virus software installed and up-to-date. See the NOAC Website, event.oa-bsa.org, for more specific information regarding these accounts. |

ARROWMAN IN ACTION: MUSIC TO HIS EARS
Most people have heard of a harmonica. Many Arrowmen have probably even played them while hiking or passing time at camp. But few are familiar with the type of harmonica that Arrowman Aidan Dougherty plays. Aidan, a member of Moswetuset Lodge from Cambridge, Massachusetts plays the glass harmonica to demonstrate the relationship of music and noise. Aidan is so enthralled with the science behind this musical instrument that he applied to be a part of the Cambridge Science Festival that is sponsored by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Science Museum. The festival hosts science corporations from around the country and is open to thousands of visitors each year. At the event, Aidan “set up fourteen perfectly tuned water glasses, representing the notes starting from middle C on the piano keyboard,” said his dad, Gary. Once they’re set up, his dad explains, Aidan plays simple tunes on them. In addition to the glasses, Aidan also set up a series of electronic kits to analyze the frequencies of the classes. “Benjamin Franklin had built a very special glass harmonica which many composers like Mozart wrote music for,” his dad said. Festival goers also got to participate with a set of glasses that Aidan set up for them to practice with. According to Aidan’s dad, festival organizers and attendees were impressed with the young Scout’s display. But what impressed people even more was the fact that Aidan is only twelve years old. Experiments like this are an example of what you can do, at any age, when you use the Power of One. |
