Operation Service: Spartan Breakout

Lansing Fire Trucks at the StadiumOperation Service sessions are activities that provide service to the surrounding community of Lansing.  "Spartan Breakout" is the most recent Operation Service project that helped local fire and police departments, campus authorities, and officials from the FBI and Homeland Security to prepare for a simulated emergency at the Spartan Stadium.

Approximately 150 Arrowmen on Tuesday gathered at the stadium to participate in the emergency drill.  Arrowmen received instructions and then staged a fire emergency that required them to be evacuated from the fourth floor of the Spartan Field complex.  Upon completion of the training, OA participants received a special Operation Service patch for their help.

A new tool for transporting people in wheelchairs was used for the first time during the drill.  The Evacu-Tracker moves people who have limited mobility down the stairs safely and quickly.  The Evacu-Tracker straps the evacuee into a Evacu-Tracker in useseated position so they can be carried down the stairs.   The transporter also has a safety breaking switch that provides security to the evacuee if the rescuer should fall or stumble.

After the training exercise, Sergeant Maureen Kennedy of the MSU Police stated that the Arrowmen’s participation was vital to the success of the exercise.  Once again the OA is providing vital service to the community.
