Swimming with the Fishes

SCUBA FlagThe name SCUBA, or Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, originated in 1939 in the US Navy to refer to US military diver's rebreather sets. At the 2006 National Order of the Arrow Conference 200 Arrowman participated in the SCUBA high adventure activity.

Arrowman SCUBA divingFor the past several NOACs, Arrowmen have been discovering SCUBA in the "Discover SCUBA " program, , a wonderful introduction to diving available to even the non-swimmer.  A shallow pool was constructed near the Armstrong facility where Arrowmen can walk up and receive a brief orientation on diving. Afterwards, they suit up and get into the water.

SCUBA BSA merit badgeThe SCUBA BSA program is conducted in clear, safe water by an instructor certified by diving organizations. Completion of SCUBA BSA requirements sets the stage for additional training, but  does not qualify the participant to dive independently, either in confined water or open water environments. The program promotes physical fitness and recreation through aquatic activities, and provides a foundation for those who will later participate in more advanced underwater activities.
