Arrowmen Kayak on Lake Lansing

Getting ready to KayakSunday morning 36 Arrowmen took part in one of the many great opportunities offered by the Camping and High Adventure Committee at NOAC and earned the BSA Kayaking award.

The participating Arrowmen started their day with Kayakingan official BSA swim check at the West Intramural Sports Building. Once the swim check was completed they were taken by bus over to Lake Lansing, a public lake about 15 minutes from the MSU campus. Upon arrival they became familiar with the Kayaks that they would be using by learning about the different parts of the kayak and how to enter and exit one. The BSA safe swimming defense and other safety practices for kayaking were also reviewed. Soon after the group was in the water kayaking Lake Lansing.

There are many requirements for the BSA kayaking award. To complete the requirements for the BSA Kayaking Award, Arrowmen have to demonstrate many different kayaking techniques such as strokes, pivoting a kayak, and ways to escape from a capsized kayak.

For many, the experience on Lake Lansing was their first time in a kayak. To complete the BSA Kayaking Award was a significant accomplishment.  This program will also be offered on both Monday and Tuesday this week.
