Michigan State University, the first institution of higher learning in the United States to teach scientific agriculture, was founded in 1855 and served as a prototype for sixty-nine land-grant institutions established under the Morrill Act of 1862. The university is located in East Lansing, three miles east of Michigan's Capitol, and sits on a 5, 200-acre campus with 660 buildings including 85 with instructional space.
