39 Arrowmen Honored with the Distinguished Service Award

In 1940, the Distinguished Service Award was created to honor those who render service to the Order beyond the lodge level. The award is presented to those Arrowmen who have rendered distinguished and outstanding service to the Order on a sectional, area, regional, or national basis. It is given primarily for dedicated service to the Order and Scouting over a period of years. This year, 39 Arrowmen were presented with the Distinguished Service Award at a dinner before the History and Recognition Show, honored during the show, and congratulated at a reception afterward.

Ross Armstrong

Ross Armstrong
Ross Armstrong is from Reno, Nevada, and the Nevada Area Council. He is an Eagle Scout and Troop Committee Chairman of Troop 152. Ross is currently a student at the University of Nevada majoring in Economics.  He has served the Order as Lodge Chief, Section W-3B Chief and in 2005 as the Western Region Chief. He has been recognized with the Founder’s Award.  His nomination reads in part, “He is a shining example of what Scouting and the Order of the Arrow stand for.”

Marcus Randolph Bailey

Marcus Randolph Bailey
Marcus Randolph Bailey is from Nitro, West Virginia, and the Chi-Hoota-Wei Lodge. He is an Eagle Scout and Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 565. Marcus is currently a student at Marshall University.  He has served the Order as Lodge Chief and as the 2004 National Conference Vice Chief for American Indian Activities. He has received the Founder’s Award and is a James E. West Fellow.  His nomination reads, “Marcus has given unselfish service to the Order on all levels of the organization.” 

Thomas S. Bain

Thomas S. Bain
Thomas S. Bain is from New York, New York, and the Greater New York Councils. He is an Eagle Scout and a member of the council board of directors. Tom is currently a managing director at BlackRock, Inc..  He has served the Order as Lodge Chief and Adviser, Section NE-2C Adviser, and on American Indian Activities NOAC staff since 1990. He has been recognized with the Founder’s Award, Silver Beaver, and Silver Antelope awards. “Tom goes out of his way to ensure that the youth are the ones who lead,” says his nomination.

Mark C. Bicket

Mark C. Bicket
Mark C. Bicket is from Edmond, Oklahoma, and the Last Frontier Council. He is an Eagle Scout and Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 78. Mark is a recent graduate of the University of Oklahoma.  He has served the Order as Section SR-3A Chief, on NLS Staff, and as the Conference Vice Chief for Shows in 2004. He has been recognized with the Founder’s Award.  “Mark always exceeds what was asked of him and routinely adds value to whatever he undertakes,” read his citation.

Robert C Black Jr.

Robert C Black Jr.
Robert C. Black, Jr. is from Vestal, New York, and the Baden Powell Council. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout as a youth and is currently a council executive board member. Bob is a manager for BAE Systems in upstate New York. He has served the Order as Lodge Adviser, Section NE-3B Adviser and on countless NOAC staffs. He has been recognized with the Founder’s Award and Silver Beaver.  His nomination reads in part, “His dedication and service have enabled Scouting to deliver our promise to youth and have left a lasting impressions on the Order in New York.”

Robert J. Crume

Robert J. Crume
Robert J. Crume is from Dewey, Oklahoma, and the Cherokee Area Council. He is an Eagle Scout and currently registered as a District Member at Large. Bob is a consultant for Accenture. He has served the Order as Lodge Chief, three terms as Section Chief, and as the Conference Vice Chief for Inductions and Ceremonial Events at the 2000 National Conference. He has been recognized with the Founder’s Award and is a member of Order of Omega.  His nomination reads, “Bob’s warm personal style has always been one of inclusion and consensus building.  He is an example of servant leadership.”

Brian Cutino

Brian Cutino
Brian Cutino is from Nesconset, New York, and the Suffolk County Council. He is an Eagle Scout and currently registered as an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 888. Brian is a student at the University of Hartford. He has served the Order as Lodge Chief for two terms, as Section NE-2B Chief for two terms, on NLS Staff and on the Northeast Region and National Web Site staffs. “Few embody the spirit of service like Brian whose extreme dedication is an example for all Arrowmen,” reads his citation.

Jared Davis

Jared Davis
Jared Davis is from Alexandria, Virginia and the National Capital Area Council. He is an Eagle Scout with seven palms and currently registered as an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 980. He has served the Order as Lodge Chief, Section NE-4C Chief for two terms and as Conference Vice Chief for Activities and Recreation at the 2004 NOAC.  He has been on numerous NLS and NLATS staffs in the Northeast Region. “Jared has demonstrated exceptional devotion and leadership to the Order and the Boy Scouts of America” reads his citation.

Seth Dearmin

Seth Dearmin
Seth Dearmin is from Pinnacle, North Carolina and the Old Hickory Council. He is an Eagle Scout and Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 400. Seth is a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina where he served as the president of the UNC Student Body.  He has served the Order as Lodge Chief, Section SR-7B Chief and in 2004 as the Southern Region Chief. He has been recognized with the Founder’s Award.  His nomination reads, “He has a proven record of accomplishment with dedicated service, positive attitude and strong leadership.”

Andrew Desilet

Andrew P. Desilet
Andrew P. Desilet hails from Tigard, Oregon and the Cascade Pacific Council. He is an Eagle Scout and Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 423. Drew is currently a student at Oregon State University.  He has served the Order as Lodge Chief, Section W-1A Chief and was the youth editor for the National Lodge Program Resource Book from 2002 to 2004. He has been recognized with the Founder’s Award.  His nomination reads in part, “Drew’s hard work and dedication in training and service to his fellow Arrowmen will be remembered for years to come.”

David Dowty

David C. Dowty
David C. Dowty currently resides in Providence, Rhode Island and is registered with the Narragansett Council. He is an Eagle Scout and a troop committee member. David is a recent graduate of Johnston and Wales University. He has served the Order as Lodge Vice Chief, Section NE-2B Chief, and as the 2004 National Vice Chief. He represented the BSA at the 2004 Arab Scout Conference and served on the BSA National Advancement Committee as a youth representative. Comments in support of his nomination read, “David C. Dowty is a giving, willing, cheerful servant and leader – a credible role model and example for so many.”

Tyson E. Ford

Tyson E. Ford is from Watertown, New York and the Hiawatha Seaway Council. He is an Eagle Scout and Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 496.  He has served the Order as Section NE-3B Secretary, Section NE-3B Chief, editor-in-chief of the 2004 NOAC Today newspaper and as a youth editor of the OA National Bulletin.  He has been recognized with the Founder’s Award. His nomination reads, “Tyson has been one of the most dynamic and organized youth integrally involved in the communications of the Order of the Arrow.”

Stephen F. Gaines

Stephen F. Gaines
Stephen F. Gaines hails from Richland, Washington and the Blue Mountain Council. He is an Eagle Scout and serves as Council Commissioner. Steve also serves on the Western Region OA Committee and the National OA History and Preservation Committee.  Steve is retired after 33 years of employment, most recently as a manager at Framatome. He has served the Order as Lodge Adviser, Section W-1C Adviser and on numerous NOAC staffs. He has been recognized with the Founder’s Award, Silver Beaver and is a James E. West Fellow.  Comments in support of his nomination read, “Steve is a humble, caring, and inspirational adviser who continues to provide distinguished and outstanding service to the Order.”

Keith Gallaway

Keith Gallaway
Keith Gallaway currently resides in Cimarron, New Mexico and serves the BSA in a professional capacity as the National Director of High Adventure. He is a Vigil Honor member of the Yah-Tah-Hey-Si-Kess Lodge. He has served the Order for over two decades as a Supreme Chief of the Fire and as the professional adviser to several sections from the Western Region while working as an Area Director.  His nomination reads, “The Order has yet to have a summer where Keith has not been consistently involved in helping to make the OA National High Adventure programs a success.”

Jeffrey R. Godley

Jeffrey R. Godley is from North Stonington, Connecticut and the Connecticut Rivers Council.  As a youth, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout and served as Lodge Chief. Jeff is an attorney with Brown, Jacobson, Tillinghast, Lahan & King, P.C. He has served as the adviser to both Section NE-3A and NE-1B and currently serves as a member his council’s executive board.  He is a James E. West fellow. His nomination reads in part, “Whether personally, professionally or in Scouting, Jeff is the embodiment of what we want the young men in the Order of the Arrow to grow to become.”

Michael Gollner

Michael Gollner is from San Diego, California and the California Inland Empire Council. He is an Eagle Scout and is an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 444. He has served the Order as Lodge Chief, Section W-4B Chief and as youth chairman for the National Events Promotions Taskforce.  He has been on numerous NLS staffs and has received the Founder’s Award. Comments in support of his nomination read, “Mike has taken the vision of building a consistent platform for national promotion and brought it to reality.”

Christopher Grove

Christopher A. Grove hails from Troy, Ohio and the Miami Valley Council.  He is an Eagle Scout and serves as Council Commissioner.  Chris is a general surgeon and a partner at Miami County Surgeons, Inc.  He has served the Order as Lodge Chief and is currently the Section C-4B Adviser.  Since 1999, Chris has served on the medical staff for national OA events and is serving as the Assistant Medical Director for the 2006 NOAC.  He is a Founder’s Award and Silver Beaver recipient.  His nomination reads in part, “He is generous and is certainly deserving of this honor for his service and the example he sets.”

Jonathan Hardin

Jonathan A. Hardin
Jonathan A. Hardin currently resides in Columbia, South Carolina and the Indian Waters Council.  He is an Eagle Scout and is an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 202.  Jonathan is a student at the South Carolina Honors College at the University of South Carolina.  He has served the Order as Lodge Chief, Section SR-5 Chief and as the Committee Chairman for the Technical Services Committee at Indian Summer in 2003.  He is a Founder’s Award recipient and was the Web Direct Chairman for the National OA Website in 2003-2004.  His nomination reads, “I am humbled by the classy and cheerful way he goes about his considerable duties.”

Matthew Kent Harris

Matthew Kent Harris is from Tigard, Oregon, and the Cascade Pacific Council. He is an Eagle Scout and Assistant Scoutmaster from Troop 423.  Matthew is currently a student at the University of Washington, Seattle. He has served as Lodge Chief, OA LodgeMaster Project Manager and in 2005 as Interim Section W-1A Chief.  He has been recognized with the Founder’s Award.  His nomination reads in part, “Matt Harris is one of the most energetic and passionate young leaders I have met.”

Glen Haynes

Glenn A. Haynes is from Richardson, Texas and the Circle Ten Council. He is a Troop Committee Member of Troop 778.  Glenn is currently Section Manager of Mechanical Engineering Department at Raytheon. He has served at NOAC, the National Jamboree, the Key 3 Summit and Indian Summer on the Administrative Services staff.  He has been recognized with the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver.  His nomination reads in part, “Glenn Haynes is one of those quiet servant leaders who can always be counted on to get the job done.”

Jeffrey Hayward

Jeffrey Edward Hayward is from Pierre, South Dakota and the Sioux Council. He is an Eagle Scout and Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 173.  Jeffrey is currently a Student at the University of South Dakota. He has served as Lodge Chief, Section Chief and as the 2004 National Chief.  He has been recognized with the Founder’s Award.  His nomination reads in part, “He always demonstrates a servant’s heart – whether taking time to talk to a wide-eyed thirteen year old member just wanting to meet and say hello or talking a national committee member...”

Paul Jensen

Paul Jensen
Paul Jensen is from Stephen, Minnesota and the Northern Lights Council. He is an Eagle Scout and an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 41.  Paul is currently a Student at the University of Minnesota. He has served as Lodge Chief, Section Chief and as the 2005 Central Region Chief.  His nomination reads in part, “His generally quiet and sometimes shy demeanor is a real strength which allows him to help others find their way into leadership positions while he provided strong and encouraging support for their efforts”

Jeffery Quinn Jonasen is from Winter Garden, Florida and the Central Florida Council. Jeffery is an Eagle Scout and is currently the Council President-Elect. He has served as Lodge Chief, Lodge Adviser and Section Adviser.  He has been recognized with the Founder’s Award, the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver.  His nomination reads in part, “Jeff Jonasen has distinguished himself from many others in many facets, crystallizing what the adult’s role in Scouting should be.”

Scott Christopher Keenan

Scott Christopher Keenan is from Fairhope, Alabama and the Mobile Area Council. He is an Eagle Scout and an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 47.  Scotty is currently a Student at the University of South Alabama majoring in Mathematics. He has served as Section Chief and as a National Jamboree Vice Chief.  His nomination reads in part, “He truly cares for our brothers in the Order and consistently demonstrates his understanding of our admonition in his relationship with others”

Craig Leighty

Craig E. Leighty is an Eagle Scout from Pleasanton, California and the San Francisco Bay Area Council. He has served as Lodge Adviser, Section Adviser, on the Special Events Staff at NOAC, as co-Adviser for the OA Museum/Center for History and is presently a member of the National Subcommittee on History and Preservation .  He has been recognized with the Founder’s Award, the District Award of Merit, Silver Beaver and is a James E. West Fellow.  His nomination reads in part, “His transformation of our work from history to ‘living’ history has been remarkable, notable, and generous.”

Bradley Long

Bradley Long is from Pulaski, Virginia and the Blue Ridge Mountains Council. He is an Eagle Scout and an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 249.  Bradley is currently a Student at King College. He has served as Lodge Chief, Section Chief and as Southern Region Chief in 2005.  He has received the Founder’s Award.  His nomination reads in part “Bradley is an exceptional young man both in and out of Scouting…He has his life focused on servant leadership.”

Edward Lyons

Edward T. Lynes is an Eagle Scout from Boston, Massachusetts and the Knox Trail Council.  He has served as Lodge Chief, Section NE-1A Chief and as the 2004 Northeast Region Chief.  He has been recognized with the Founder’s Award.  His nomination reads in part, “I envy his energy and intellect, his drive for perfection and his insistence to ‘go the extra mile’ long after others quit saying ‘that’s good enough’.”

Seth Y. Mollitt

Seth Y. Mollitt is from Jacksonville, Florida and the North Florida Council. He is an Eagle Scout and on the Troop Committee of Troop 35.  Seth is currently a student at the University of Florida. He has served as Section Chief and as The 2005 National Vice Chief.  He has been recognized with the Founder’s Award.  His nomination reads in part, “Seth was completely at ease as a leader, and he inspired those with whom he served to work nearly as hard as he did.”

Daniel O'Rourke

Daniel J. O’Rourke is an Eagle Scout from Wilbraham, Massachusetts and serves his council as an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 359. Before serving as the Northeast Region Chief in 2005, Dan served as the Section Chief of NE-1B.  He has staffed and organized many NLS and NLATS in the Northeast Region and served as a member of the Regional Committee. One section of his citation mentioned that “he rarely displays his ego about his office and position and is a true example of what scouting can produce in a young man.”

Patrick Murphy

Patrick Murphy
Patrick Murphy is from Tempe, Arizona and the Grand Canyon Council. He is an Eagle Scout and currently registered as an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 853. He served the Order as the 2005 National Chief and as a Section Chief in 2004. Serving as a staff member for NLS and NLATS all over the country, Patrick’s citation reads: “his passion for Scouting and the Order is a true breath of fresh air and he is dedicated to serving others.”

C. Thomas Ritchey

C. Thomas Ritchey
C. Thomas Ritchey is an Eagle Scout from Irving, Texas where he is currently serving as a professional scouter with the National Council. Throughout his career in scouting he has served as a section staff advisor for 16 years, Council Scout Executive, and as the Director of the National Camping School. Thomas is currently an Associate Director with Information Systems for the BSA. His citation read that “he has performed exceptionally in all he has been asked to do.”

Gilbert Rogers

Gilbert Rogers, III
Gilbert Rogers, III is an Eagle Scout from Middletown, Connecticut and the Connecticut Rivers Council, where he serves as an Assistant Scoutmaster for his home unit. Gil served the Order as a three-term section chief, 2003 Editor of the Northeast Region Visionary, and the Conference Vice Chief for Training at the 2004 NOAC. In addition to this service, Gil has served many years as part of the OA Wilderness Voyage staff. His citation reads: “he has helped improve the lives of hundreds of Arrowmen as a result of his dedication and hard work.”

Robin Jerry Rosamond

Robin Jerry Rosamond is an Eagle Scout from Keizer, Oregon where he is currently serving as an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 20.  Rob has served the Order as Section Vice-Chief and a two-term Section Chief of W-1A, and is a member of the National Web Team. He has also served on many NLS and NLATS staffs for the Western Region. His citation read that Rob “is a standout Section Chief and Arrowman.”

David Ross

David J. Ross, II
David J. Ross is an Eagle Scout from Southlake, Texas and is currently the Assistant Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America. He began his scouting career in 1967 as a District Executive and as a Council Scout Executive since 1977. In 1977, David also served as the Director of the National Council Services Division. His citation reads notes that Ross’ “service to the Scouting profession speaks volumes about his character and is a true testament to the Boy Scout ideals.”

Joe Sadewasser

Joe Sadewasser
Joe Sadewasser is an Eagle Scout from Dubuque, Iowa where he serves the Northeast Iowa Council as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 25. Joe served as the 2004 Central Region Chief and previously as a Lodge Chief and Section Chief. Joe served as a member of the Central Region Executive Board and has staffed many NLATS and NLS conferences. His citation reads that “Joe is a brother who wears the sash proudly and leads others to do the same.”

Brian Stock

Brian D. Stock
Brian D. Stock is an Eagle Scout from Olympia, Washington and currently serves as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 48 of Pacific Harbors Council. Brian has served as Section Secretary, Section Vice Chief, and as the Chief of Section W-1B. In addition to staffing many NLS and NLATS seminars, Brian helped to develop the Conclave Training Initiative from 2002 to 2005. His citation notes "here is a young man who has a long habit of stepping forward and giving distinguished service to the purpose and principles of the Order."

Michael L. Thompson

Michael L. Thompson
Michael L. Thompson is an Eagle Scout from Mauldin, South Carolina and currently serves as the Council Commissioner of Blue Ridge Council and as the member of the Executive Board of the Southern Region. Michael has a strong record of service as an advisor for Section SR-5 and as a staff member for many National Conferences. In addition, Michael has been serving as the Southern Region’s NLATS coordinator for the past four years. His citation notes that “Michael tends to stay away from the spotlight but has been a superb behind-the-scenes leader and motivator for many youth Arrowmen.”

Nicholas Williams

Nicholas Williams
Nicholas Williams is an Eagle Scout from Dubuque, Iowa and serves as a District Executive in the W.D. Boyce Council. Nick served as the 2003 Indian Summer Program Vice Chief for Activities and Recreation and has staffed many NLS and NLATS seminars.  He also served as the C-3B Section Vice-Chief and Section Chief. His citation reads that “the legacy he leaves with the youth he serves is exactly why we are all involved with the Order of the Arrow.”

Phil Vanderwerker

Phil Vanderwerker
Phil Vanderwerker is an Eagle Scout from Glen Rock, New Jersey and is a member of the Northern New Jersey Council. Phil served as a two-term lodge chief as a youth has staffed a number of national OA conferences. He has contributed a great deal of effort towards improving the OA Wilderness Voyage and served as the Assistant Director in 2003 and 2004 before serving as Director of the entire program in 2005. His citation reads “Phil is an outstanding leader who has dedicated himself to serving our OA national high adventure and service programs.”
