Everyone knows that E. Urner Goodman was the founder of this great organization we call the Order of the Arrow. However, few know much about Dr. Goodman as an individual. Early Monday afternoon Arrowmen were given that opportunity, as the surviving son and daughter of our founder joined the conference and provided a glimpse into the colorful life of their father.
The afternoon gathering painted a
picture of a man that few of us in the Order today have had a chance to meet. Everyone knows of Goodman's
true and sincere passion to help youth and for servant leadership. A number
of stories were told by his son Ted Goodman and his daughter Anne Goodman. The personal
accounts they shared illustrated just how free spirited and full of life our
founder was.
For example, they shared an account of the construction of the Brotherhood Barn. Dr. Goodman requested that lodges from across the nation send rocks to be included in the chimney. It was said that Dr. Goodman's postman was a little exhausted by the time all of the stones were shipped to him.
Other stories told of Dr. Goodman's commitment to church. If he ever did anything other then spend time with his family and go to his church, Dr. Goodman would feel very guilty. That story led to another story of Dr. Goodman and his "heavy foot." In fact, he was once pulled over on his way to church, and not only talked his way out of the ticket, but had the officer provide an escort to church.
Each story illustrated a man who not only had a divine passion for the
organization he founded, but who also lived out its virtues in his daily life.
Though few still active in the Order have had the chance to meet him, stories
such as the ones shared Monday afternoon keep his memory and spirit alive in
all Arrowmen.
