Then and Now
Bob Szczys

Bob Szczys was the National OA Chief in 1967. Let's see what is different between Then and Now.

What has changed since the 1960's in the Order of the Arrow?

First the size of the conference. Back then it was around 4,500 with staff, and many of the staff were participants who volunteered to help. The program has also changed too, it has become more complex because of the evolving technology.

Has being a National Chief helped you? If so, how?

Yes, it has. It taught me many time management and program planning skills.

Was it hard being the National Chief?

It was difficult, but not hard. The most difficult thing that I had to do was dealing with new challenges as they arose.

What is different now?

The chief has to do more things, he is a member of many committees, and is gone almost every weekend to visit different places.

What was different then?

The Chief's only responsibility was planning the conference. When the conference was over, I went back to school.

Being the National OA Chief is a daunting task for anyone. Do you feel being the National Chief was harder then or harder now?

I would have to say now, because he [the Chief] does so much and is involved in many committees in the OA and the Boy Scouts.
