Meet the Man
Joseph Csatari
Official Artist of the BSA

Joseph Csatari

For as long as he can remember Joseph Csatari wanted to be an artist. For almost that long, Joe Csatari has admired the work of the one of the world's greatest illustrators, Norman Rockwell.

Csatari is a man who has lived his dreams.  Today he is one of the nation's premier artists and illustrators.  His paintings adorn the walls of the board rooms of the Fortune 500.  His work has appeared in the Saturday Evening Post, Reader's Digest, Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, and McCall's, just to name a few.

His paintings have been made into two commemorative U.S. Postage Stamps, collectible plates, and figurines.  He is a book illustrator, having painted the covers and illustrations of more than 100 books.

Scouting Through the Years

Perhaps most importantly to Scouts and Scouters, Joseph Csatari is the official artist of the Boy Scouts of America.  Since 1977, Csatari has painted more than thirty portraits for the BSA.  He says that it is his paintings of "Boy Scouts being Boy Scouts, having fun in the outdoors, and doing community service projects" that he finds most rewarding.

"All you ever read about today is the bad side of kids," Csatari says.  "But Scouting teaches kids to be good citizens.  That's why I'm so glad to be part of this thing.  My goal every time I sit at my easel is to depict all that is good with the Scouting movement."

On Sunday afternoon participants at NOAC had an opportunity to meet this remarkable man at a special retrospective viewing of his artwork at Stephens Auditorium.  Those in attendance witnessed a unique multimedia presentation displaying Mr. Csatari's artwork produced for the Boy Scouts of America and the Order of the Arrow over the last four decades.   After the presentation, there was a question and answer period moderated by Nick Digirolamo, the 2003 National Chief, in which the audience posed questions directly to the master painter. Among the questions asked were "What was your favorite painting you did for the BSA?", "What was it like meeting Norman Rockwell for the first time?", "How long does it take you to complete a painting?", and the audience's favorite question was "Do you have a flap you would like to trade?" Those Arrowmen in attendance received a coupon that can be redeemed at the conference trading post for a unique limited edition "Meet the Man" patch .
