History/Recognition Show

The NOAC Shows Staff continued to provide the conference with an excellent show Sunday night. History and Recognitions was the theme of the show. It was truly amazing! The National Chief presented all of the national awards such as the Distinguished Service Award, Red Arrow Award, and the Lifetime Achievement Award. There were 42 DSA recipients, three Red Arrow recipients, and one Lifetime Achievement recipient.

Once again, Arrowmen filled the Hilton Coliseum with pride, a strong display of lodge spirit and enthusiasm for the second show of the conference. Chants began as lodges yelled their name. A number of lodges had Arrowmen dressed in costume such as the sumo wrestler, panda bears and the dancing turtles. There was even a wrestling match between the bears and the sumo wrestler.

The lights dimmed and National Chief Jeff Hayward, presented special guest, Chief Scout Executive Roy L. Williams. Mr. Williams praised the Order for its contribution to Scouting and the community. He thanked all Arrowmen for the service provided to the Scout camps and communities across the nation, and the servant leadership of our members.

DSA presentationThe National Chief along with the National Vice, Brad Haddock the National OA Chairman, and Billy Walley the Vice Chairman of Awards and Recognitions, presented the DSA recipients with their award plaques.

Next, Brad Haddock presented the Red Arrow Awards. Less than 50 people have received this rare award in the Order's history. Following the Red Arrow presentations, Dr. Carl M.Lifetime Award Marchetti, a long time Order of the Arrow member of 50 years and a past National OA Committee Chairman, was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Marchetti expressed his gratitude for the recognition, and encouraged Arrowmen to continue upon the Order's vision of servant leadership. He wore a red Vigil Honor sash that had belonged to Dr. E. Urner Goodman, Founder of the Order of the Arrow and a long time friend of Dr. Marchetti. The conference gave Dr. Marchetti a standing ovation.

National Chief SpeakingFollowing the spectacular award presentations, the National Chief spoke. He reminded us of the leadership of a few famous historical leaders. One of those leaders was President Theodore Roosevelt. Jeff reminded us of the president's determination to succeed even in the midst of irksome tasks and weighty responsibilities. The president had a willingness to succeed and he knew no limits to what he could accomplish. Another famous leader was George Washington. Jeff spoke of a time when, during the American Revolutionary War, General Washington came across soldiers having some difficulty in accomplishing a task. The general went to help the soldiers, even though he was a higher military level. The story illustrated the characteristic of servant leadership. Next, Jeff spoke of a personal friend named Steven. Steven, although two years younger, inspired Jeff when he entered the Order. Steven's determination to succeed, even when he was diagnosed with leukemia, inspired others around him. Even though Steven lost his battle with leukemia a few year's ago, he is still a reminder that one can overcome barriers.

In a line talkingThe show continued with highlights of the new Order of the Arrow high adventure program at Florida Seabase, the OA Ocean Adventure. Then the participants enjoyed a prologue setting the stage for the conference theme show on Wednesday night. This live drama introduced the main characters and provided background for the upcoming show .
