Patch Trading at NOAC

The Treasured Lord of the Rings Flap SetPatch trading is probably the biggest way for NOAC participants to spend their spare time. There will be thousands of patches traded during the conference, and most likely, many of them will be traded more than once. But unlike some hobbies, patch trading is more than just getting the rarest patch, it is about fellowship and friendship. "It is a good chance to meet and interact with the youth," said Mike Rochowiak as he set up to trade A Rare Findthis morning. Some even say that patch trading is why they are still in Scouting. "When I was a kid, a man in my troop taught me about patch trading, and spreading cheerful service with it, and that keep me in Scouting," said Henry Halter. It also branches into other hobbies too. "I like bears, so I collect patches with bears on them," said John W. who has personally collected over 300 patches.

A NOAC Flap with its ghost counterpartSome conference participants have been collecting patches for a long time. "I got started at the National Jamboree in 97", said Zack N, who now has a collection of 3,000+ patches. Other Arrowmen just started their collecting since they got to NOAC. "We got started this year, actually just 2 days ago,"; said Aaron and Beans, as they proudly show off their collection of just over 100 patches.

Some NOAC Ghost FlapsFor those who are just getting started with patch trading or for anyone who is unsure if they are getting a good deal, there are the Special Events Short Bus"Patch Police", with the blue rectangular name plate, who are more than happy to give advice. They want to make sure that everyone comes away with a good feeling about their patch trading experience.

Patch trading is also a great way to learn about the history of the Order of the Arrow. "I started my collection in 1964 at the National Jamboree. Since then, I have learned a great deal of history, while having fun," says Jambo Jerry, who has a collection of 8,000+ patches.
