AMERICAN INDIAN TRAINING CELLS

In addition to the CELL topics below, a number of very specialized craft and training workshop activities will be available at NOAC. A list of these activities can be found in the 2002 National Conference Program Packet.

101 Fancy Dance - Fast paced and exciting; learn about all aspects of this dance style. The training cell will include an introduction into the fancy dance style and clothing. Participants will also have the opportunity to spend time learning more about one of the following: Fancy Dancing, Bustles, Capes and Aprons, or Porcupine Hair Roach.

102 Grass Dance - One of the most popular and fastest growing of the dance styles. The training cell will include an introduction into the grass dance style and clothing. Participants will also have the opportunity to spend time learning more about one of the following: Grass Dancing, Porcupine Hair Roach, or Traditional Accessories.

103 Old Style Dance - Just as the name describes, one of the oldest styles of dance offered. Learn about everything from research to dancing. Participants will also have the opportunity to spend time learning more about one of the following: Old Style Dancing, Bustles, or Traditional Accessories.

104 Traditional Dance - The most popular style of dance across the country. Just one class and you'll see why! The training cell will include an introduction into the traditional dance style and clothing. Participants will also have the opportunity to spend time learning more about one of the following: Traditional Dancing, Bustles, or Traditional Accessories.

105 Straight Dance - Southern Traditional dance at its best! Learn about the different types of outfits that make up this dance style. Participants will also have the opportunity to spend time learning more about one of the following: Straight Dancing, Ribbon Work, Otter Draggers, Scalp Feathers, and Flat Fans.

106 Beadwork - We are offering these classes plus many more. By the time you're finished you'll be able to bead almost anything. Participants will learn how to do the following kinds of beadwork: Lazy Stitch and Heddle Loom. They will also have the opportunity to spend time learning more about one of the following: Gourd Stitch, Applique, or Edge Beading.

107 Quillwork - What was used before beads were available? Porcupine Quills! See how they are wrapped and stitched to decorate a variety of items. The cell will include both introductory and advanced sessions for participants.

108 Feather Work - Learn how to turn feathers into little hair feathers or giant Fancy Dance bustles. Participants will learn how to do the following kinds of feather work: Painting Feathers and Feather Laws. They will also have the opportunity to spend time learning more about one of the following: Scalp Feathers, Bustles, or Fans.

109 Bone Work - Trying to find that last item to finish off your outfit? Bone work makes a fine addition to any type of outfit. Participants will learn how to do the following kinds of bone work: Chokers and Bandoleers. They will also have the opportunity to spend time learning more about one of the following: Breast Plates or Imitation Bear Claw Necklaces.

110 Build Your Own Cell - You can also make your own training cell by choosing three classes from the extensive American Indian craft and training class list, which was also enclosed in the 2002 National Conference Program Packet that was mailed to your lodge contingent leader.

CAMPING AND HIGH ADVENTURE TRAINING CELLS

201 Leave No Trace - Are you planning a wilderness high adventure trip into the backcountry? Have you heard about the leave no trace camping award? Learn more about the principles of leave no trace from some of the foremost experts in the country. Learn about the wilderness ethic that will prepare you for walking softly in the unspoiled wilderness. If you are into camping, hiking, or canoeing, you will find this session filled with practical advice. Each session will be limited to 250 participants.

202 Wilderness Medicine - Learn some of the basics of Emergency Wilderness Medicine.

203 High Adventure - Have you seen the "Passport to High Adventure" book? Do you or the members of your Scout unit plan to go on a high adventure trip this year? Next year? Learn how to properly plan for a high adventure trip. Get tips from Arrowmen who are really into high adventure. This session will cover not only planning but also great ideas for high adventure trips that you troop or team might like to plan and more importantly do! Each session will be limited to 100 participants.

204 Small Shiny Objects For The Mind - Get up to date on the latest technologies for wilderness expeditions. An in-depth instruction on gear from stoves, to compass, to kayaks. This cell will give Arrowmen great hands-on opportunities.

205 Intense Scuba (XTCS) - Overview of the scuba sport including travel, photography, technical diving, archeology, wreck diving, and rescue diving. Seesion will provide classroom discussion and slides as well as safety orientation, equipment familiarization, and 45 minutes underwater.

206 The Experienced Kayaker - Hands-on experience for experienced kayakers. During this session you will discuss kayaking opportunities around the country, trade tips and techniques and participate in a hot moves clinic.

INDUCTIONS AND CEREMONY TRAINING CELLS / WORKSHOP

Training Cells:

301 Introduction to Ceremonies - Geared towards new members, ceremony chairmen and advisers with an interest in learning the components of the Pre-Ordeal and Ordeal ceremonies, the 4 principal characters and ceremony staging and production.

302 Before the Ordeal - A session intended for all members involved with induction committees or those with an interest in unit elections, the call-out ceremony and the use of the OA Troop Representative in the induction sequence.

303 Making the Ordeal a Success - Arrowmen involved in Ordeal management will enhance their knowledge of the 10 induction principles, Ordeal management and the role of the Elangomat in jumpstarting new lodge members.

304 Sealing the Ties of Brotherhood - This session will cover the Journey to Brotherhood program and the symbolism of the Brotherhood ceremony in an in depth discussion of ways to inspire Arrowmen to seal their membership. BROTHERHOOD/VIGIL MEMBERS ONLY

305 THE VIGIL COMMITMENT - Enhance your understanding and personal commitment to the Vigil Honor by examining it from start to finish. It will include history, symbolism, candidate selection, call-out and Vigil staging. VIGIL MEMBERS ONLY

306 THE CEREMONIAL TIME MACHINE - For members interested in the development of the Order's ceremonies, this session will survey the timeline of ceremony development since its origins on Treasure Island.

307 Inductions Adviser Stuff - The role of the adviser in all aspects of the induction process, from Unit Elections to the Brotherhood conversion; learn how to be an effective adviser of inductions management.

308 Perfecting the Principals - This cell will cover an in-depth discussion of the 4 principal characters, develop performance techniques and fine-tune acting skills. FOR MORE ADVANCED CEREMONIAL PERFORMERS

309 Introducing the Guide to Inductions - This session will briefly introduce the new national publication, The Guide to Inductions. This session will offer ways to best utilize it in the lodge and discuss ways to share the information with others.

310 More than you know: OA Symbolism - A study of the symbolism in the Order's ceremonies, which follows a natural progression designed to awaken the candidate's membership. BROTHERHOOD/VIGIL MEMBERS ONLY

311 Dress for Success - Learn the appropriate ceremonial costuming, how to utilize accessories and props, and ensure authenticity in your ceremonies. (Offered in conjunction with experts from American Indian Activities)

Workshop:

399 THE COMPLETE INDUCTIONS TRAINING This intensive training workshop is a must for Inductions chairmen and advisers or those seriously interested in inductions and ceremonies. This course introduces and details the new Guide to Inductions. Special attention will be given to Unit Elections, the Call-Out, Ordeal Management, Journey to Brotherhood, Ceremony Team Training and the conversion to Brotherhood. MEETS SUNDAY, MONDAY AND TUESDAY MORNING FROM 8:30-11:30. (Although this session uses the term "workshop" in its description, it is really a 3-day cell. To register for it you should list this session number in the "CELL" boxes for all three days on your registration form.)

LEADERSHIP, PROGRAM, AND ADMINISTRATION TRAINING CELLS

401 Train the Trainer - (Note: This Cell is a three-day Cell. You must attend all three days.) This intense, three-day training program will develop youth into great trainers who can design, develop, and implement exemplary training. Participants will be given the tools to build model OA training at the lodge, section, and national levels. Special application (23 Kbyte PDF file, 1 page) should be completed. See Contingent Leader. List this session number all three days on your registration form.

402 Skills and Tools of the Lodge Adviser - This cell is designed as an introduction for the adult leadership of a lodge. Here, concepts and ideas are given to facilitate the job of an adviser, specifically, that the adviser lets the youth drive the bus, while the adviser gives direction.

403 Mentoring Youth Leaders - This cell introduces inspiration as the primary motivation for youth. Through this cell, adults learn methods of instructing successful attitudes, creating mentoring environments, and methods of mentoring youth.

404 Arrowmen 101 - A comprehensive overview look at the opportunities for leadership, fellowship, and involvement within the Order, especially at the chapter and lodge level. It will include an overview of the Order's history, as well as a quick start program for youth and adult relations.

405 At the Top - Investigates the role of key adults, including professionals, at the lodge leadership level, the dynamics and workings of the Key Three, and how to create a great working relationship with the Supreme Chief of the Fire.

406 The Art of Special Events - Learn how to kick every event up a notch (bam!) through creative uses of materials, location, program ideas, and, believe it or not, color. It will investigate new technological advances to further enhance lodge and chapter functions at low costs.

407 Shows and Showmanship - This cell will cover the basics of shows and showmanship. This is an essential session for lodges and chapters who display shows for program. Fundamentals covered included, developing scripts, creating the shows team, and execution of the show.

408 Lodge Events...Making the Dull Shine - Are your lodge functions - less than satisfying? Fear not! They don't have to be. This session works to make the meetings, programs, and recognitions effective and meaningful, helping to turn the mundane into something refreshing and unique.

409 Recruiting Allies - Learn how to identify individuals who share a common view, recruiting them to join a team, developing a team and delivering the team into a specific mission.

410 Creating A Super Troop Program - Ways Arrowmen can return service to their troop. Specifically, turning a mediocre troop into a dynamic machine.

411 Publications - An overview of the newsletter production process, with emphasis on layout and article content based off of National OA Bulletin techniques.

412 Council Relations - Identify where in the Council's plan as well as the BSA does the Order of the Arrow serve. Learn what are the function, purpose and position of the Order.

413 Mastering the Mini Lodge - Programming, administration, and preventing burn-out. Deals with the unique challenges of lodges with 300 members or less (for current and prospective lodge officers & advisers).

414 I've Done It All, Now What? - For the youth member 18 to 20 who is active on the lodge and chapter level but is no longer a lodge or chapter officer.

415 Taming the Mega Lodge - Brotherhood conversion, induction logistics, and involving the membership. Deal with the unique challenges of an 800+ lodge (for current and prospective lodge officers & advisers).

416 How To Be Chiefly - Being elected Chief doesn't necessarily make the youth Chiefly. There are traits in an individual that makes them chiefly and this cell will present these aspects and tools for integration into one's own personality. This cell will described that the man makes the office and not the office the man.

417 Scoutreach & the OA - Developing troops through the Scoutreach program, coaching & mentoring, and delivering the OA program.

418 Leadership & Motivation - This cell will describe ways on how to succeed, getting the team together, and event planning. This will teach the finer points of leadership and motivation.

419 OA's Role In Summer Camp - How to incorporate summer camp promotion, OA-sponsored program elements such as Indian Village or trail crew, and OA-specific activities such as the Ordeal & journey to Brotherhood in the summer camp program.

420 After 21 Youth to Adult Transition - Is there life after 21? Describes adult responsibilities and techniques, effective roles & opportunities in your new role, and the best of both worlds as a young adult.

421 Making Life Easy - In this cell, tools and methods will be introduced to Arrowmen to facilitate life and take the paths of least resistance.

422 OA Troop Rep Program - Implementing the program, the Troop Rep in action, developing support & resources, and lodge & chapter level recognition.

423 Membership Retention - Ordeal to Brotherhood transition, keeping older youth involved, and creating & maintaining lodge traditions.

424 Creating the Cutting-edge Conclave - Create conclave programs that make lodge members come back for more. Deals with programming, training, administration, and building the team.

425 E-Scouting - The same team of Arrowmen developed this cell that operate the National Order of the Arrow Web Site. Learn to build a web site as a vehicle for effective communications. [More Info on this session]

426 Fundamentals for Successful Lodge Events - The lodge or chapter event is a leaders biggest challenge. Keeping a staff motivated and developing quality program can be an ongoing problem. This cell addresses those and many other issues surrounding event planning and delivery.

427 Ordeal Management - This seminar covers the administrative and leadership opportunities that present themselves and how to deal with them. NOTE: This session deals with the Leadership Development (Team Building) aspects of Ordeal Management.

428 Lodge Training Programs - Is your Lodge Leader Development Course something that everyone WANTS to attend? Did you realize that the LLDC training program is the cornerstone of all Order of the Arrow training? Do you use the best methods to develop your trainers? This cell will give you the best ideas from round the country.

429 Health, Medical and Special Needs - This cell is great for new Advisers! When is it ok and when does your responsibility as an adviser override the wants of the youth. It's all about fiduciary responsibility, and your job to review if things are safe. Know the guidelines and know the rules.

430 Section Stuff - If you are a section leader, conclave chairman, or want a better idea of how the section works, this cell will give you the details.

431 Role of the Chapter - Chapter program I sometimes the most difficult to administer and make effective. This cell will give you tools and ideas to make your chapters function better.

432 Motivating and Leading People - Understand the dynamics that make you a better leader of people, an learn the skills you can use to motivate people to follow your lead.

433 The Path to Brotherhood - In this cell, participants will be given the basic concept of getting their brotherhood, as well as introduced to programs and opportunities available beyond just brotherhood membership.

434 Building a Championship Lodge - This session will show participants that there is more than just the Quality Lodge. It will stress team building as well as how to give OA members pride in the organization they are a part of. The session will actually happen in a sporting setting and will rely on team dynamics associated with common sports.

435 The Parts They Play (Adults in the OA) - In this session participants will learn what the adult role actually is, and what they need to do to support the young leaders of the organization. It will also show participants ways to keep older Arrowmen involved in lodge activities.

436 Quality Lodge: Nuts and Bolts - This cell will cover the basic aspects of the Quality Lodge Petition form, and also share ideas in how to build a strong team and keep it strong consistently.

437 Service...Training and the Deliver of the NOAC Service Project - This cell will actually allow you to help build and deliver the NOAC Service project during the conference. Learn the inner workings of how a service project gets built and delivered, and have some fun with it.

438 National Leadership Seminar PART TWO - Prerequisite: To enroll for this offering you must have attended the National Leadership Seminar of the Order of the Arrow in the last 8 years. This cell will build on the core principles of the NLS – Know, Be and Do and expand beyond what you would expect from a leadership training the concepts of Managing Leadership, Delivery.

439 High Adventure Leadership Opportunities - This cell will build on the core principles of Order of the Arrow High Adventure established at Philmont Scout Ranch and the Northern Tier Canoe Base. You will learn the keys to building a program like these in your own lodge, using your council camp as the setting.

440 Personal Leadership Development - In this cell, Arrowmen will learn the basics of conversations, relationships, and administration. This is a threshold session for Arrowmen who need a boost or introduction to successful leadership.

441 The New National Boy Scout Growth Plan - A steady flow of youth into a Boy Scout Troop is essential to maintaining a troop's health. New Scouts bring energy and enthusiasm to a troop program. This cell will focus on how lodge's and Arrowmen can provide meaningful support to Webelos transitioning, troop open house, and boy to boy recruiting programs.

442 Developing New Directions in Junior Leader Training (Monday & Tuesday Only) - What is the future of Junior Leader Training? Where is it headed? How soon will it be revised. This cell will provide Arrowmen, youth and adult the opportunity to provide thoughts and ideas on the development and revisions of the Council Junior Leader Training Conference, the Scoutmaster's Junior Leader Training conference and the National Junior Leader Instructor's Conference. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to assist us in testing a new internet based Scout Leader's Assessment tool!

443 Strengthening the Boy Scout Advancement Program - Strong Advancement in Boy Scout Troops and Varsity Teams will strengthen the OA lodge and enhance the achievement of our goals. In this session, you will discuss how your helping units improve their advancement will build a stronger lodge and improve relationships between the lodge, units, and the council.

WORKSHOPS (LEADERSHIP, PROGRAM, AND ADMINISTRATION)

601 Techno Training Workshop - The team that developed the new National O/A Train the Trainer DVD program will walk you through the methods and ideas they used to build the new Train the Trainer. This will be hands on workshop that addresses the equipment and methods for high tech training. Learn the secrets of PowerPoint, video editing and the secrets to training in the techno environment.

602 Professional Staff Advisers Only (all BSA professionals are invited) - An open panel review of the Staff Advisers role in the Order of the Arrow. Meet the BSA leaders that have been there, and worked as staff advisers. The guided discussion will address the role of the Order in the Council program. Questions and open discussion will allow the format to cover many topics. An intro that discusses the position and the job details will precede the open discussion.

603 Scoutnet 2002 - The OA Datalink - Learn the most current offerings from the Scoutnet system, and learn how your lodge can benefit from the hidden potential of the system that your council now uses. The professional staff from the National Office of the Boy Scout of American will deliver this cell.

604 Elections Simulator - Simulation activities to practice effective election procedures. This will be the best practical application of the Unit Election process you have ever viewed. It will answer all the tough questions you have or have gotten about Unit Elections. Great opportunity for any Arrowmen tasked with unit elections.

605 WWW on the WWW - An opportunity to explore the development of your lodge's website, get some tricks of the trade from a real life Web Development professional.

606 Ethics Symposium - Ethics: A series of situations posed to a distinguished panel, made up of civic, BSA and educational panelists. The audience will have an opportunity to interact and react to given situations. This is a must see if you have ever questioned how ethical standards are applied to everyday situations inside and outside of the BSA program. Hear how non-BSA people react to situations posed using ethical standards.

607 Tools A Chief Must Have - Organizing & chairing lodge meetings, program development and materials, and national resources.

608 Lodge Simulator - Experience the management opportunities of lodges through an intense, interactive game.

609 Planning and Delivering - In a catalytic workshop, learn how to anticipate shortfalls during lodge and chapter gatherings and events. You will be able to quickly solve the sudden problems that spring up, and deliver a stellar event.

610 Lodge Finances - This course teaches the nuts and bolts of managing your lodge budget, and will tackle such issues as fund raising, budgeting for events, service, and fun, and maximizing the power of the all-mighty dollar.

611 Lodge Trading Post Development and Supply - In this session learn how to effectively run a Lodge/Section trading post. You will cover everything from effective marketing/pricing to brainstorming ideas on what to sell.

612 Best Methods of Leadership - Participants will be faced with a series of vignettes (little skits) and then, through teamwork, logic, and women's intuition, work to develop the best possible solutions given the situation. This will develop one's decision-making skills and effectiveness. This workshop is a must for new lodge and chapter chiefs who want to build a personal success plan.

613 Jump Start - Get a full-scale introduction to the new Jump Start CD produced by the Order of the Arrow. It will include a review of the program, how to use the incorporate the information from the CD into lodge program, and tips and techniques to ensure the program's success.

614 Patch Creation and Design - This workshop breaks down the parts of a patch design into four elements and discusses their balance with each other. It also includes a brief survey of some resources for ideas for patch designs.

615 Public Speaking - In this workshop, participants will learn what it takes to be good at speaking in front of groups. How do you get your point across? How do you stay confident?

616 Becoming Akela (Cub Scout Stuff) - This cell will cover what the OA's new role in Cub Scouting will be. What will we be doing in the future? What can we do?
