The Higher Vision Painting Dedication

Higher Vision painting Today, the National Order of the Arrow Committee presented framed and signed prints of The Higher Vision to Aquehongian Lodge #112 of Staten Island, New York, Greater New York Council. In honor of the Lodge’s significant contribution to the Order, the Lodge is receiving set # 112.

The Higher Vision is an inspirational painting related to the Order of the Arrow.  It is a picture of an Indian handing a leather parchment of the OA legend, which was developed in Aquehongian Lodge by Lee A. Ellison, to a Scout who wears an OA sash. It illustrates the idea that Uncas, of OA legend fame, is passing on the legend of the founding of the Order to a Scout. The Scout represents an Order of the Arrow member in Ellison’s Staten Island Troop 43. The Scout is wearing an Aquehongian Lodge neckerchief with a 25th anniversary slide. The painting was commissioned by Vigil Honor members of Aquehongian Lodge and was created by Joseph Csatari, a protégé of Norman Rockwell.

In 1961, members of Aquehongian Lodge were searching for an appropriate way to memorialize their long term lodge adviser, Lee A. Ellison, who had recently passed away. Ellison was the adviser of Aquehongian Lodge from 1940 to 1957. In addition, he was the Scoutmaster of Troop 43, chartered at that time to the Slosson Post, American Legion. When Ellison passed away, his Vigil Honor brothers thought of many things that they might do to remember his service and dedication to the OA and Scouting. The painting, in Ellison's honor, was presented to the National Order of the Arrow Committee in October 1963.

On Monday, Lodge Chief Mike and Lodge Adviser Ron accepted the recognition, presented by National Chief Clay Capp and National Vice Chief Riley Berg, on behalf of Aquehongian Lodge #112 and in memory of Lee A. Ellison.
