Match Game Rules

1) The game is played between two individual contestants or two teams of contestants. Contestants must be under 21 years of age. A team captain will be selected.

2) A team may only play against another team. The team may have no more than 3 members.

3) There is a six-member celebrity panel. Both adults and youth may take part in the panel.

4) The game consists of two rounds, with each contestant/team playing one question per round. If there is no returning champion, a toss of the coin determines who plays first. Otherwise, the challenger chooses the first question from two choices offered, labeled "A" and "B".

5) A question consists of a statement with a blank in it. The host will read the question first to the panel. Panelists will write a response on a note card that fills in the blank. Once all panelists are through writing, the host will then present the question to the contestant again and ask him for his response.

6) One at a time, the panelists will reveal their responses, showing their note cards so that they are readily visible by the judge. If the judge determines that the contestant's answer matches that of the panelist, the judge will credit the contestant with a match. The judge's decision is final regarding whether a match has been scored.

7) A match scores one point in the first round or two points in the second round. The contestant with the most points at the end of the second round wins and is declared champion.

8) If the second round ends with a tie score, contestants will compete in a third round. Game play and scoring is the same as the first round. The team which scores the greater number of matches in this round wins the game.

9) If the third round ends with a tie score, contestants will compete in a sudden-death round. The host will read a brief statement with a blank (e.g., "[blank] Chief"). The contestants, not the panelists, will write their responses. The champion will then choose one of the panelists, who will offer a verbal reply. If it matches either contestant's correct answer, that contestant wins immediately. If not, the challenger will then choose one of the remaining panelists to play. The contestants will alternate choosing panelists until one offers a reply that matches. If all six panelists offer responses that do not match, the question is throw out, and the host will read a similar question, with game play continuing under this rule until a match is scored.

10) A contestant will retired undefeated upon winning three consecutive games, and is not able to play again.
