American Indian Activities Unleashed!

Arrowmen show their dancing skills to participants. If you thought that hip-hop was the only cool style of dance for the youth of today, then you’d be correct. However, if you think that it’s the only fun style—there, you’d be wrong. The American Indian Activities (AIA) committee has been working very hard over the past year to put together a high quality-training program that includes 11 styles of Native American dance from seven distinctive cultural areas. Additionally, they have also assembled stellar program areas ranging from the crafts area, to the Indian games, to the evening pow-wows.

High quality and authentic dance costumes are the trademark of Indian Summer. One unique facet of the program is the AIA resource library, which houses various written materials on team dances, singing and drumming, and proper costuming from all the cultural regions. The AIA staff has provided all these materials for use by all Indian Summer participants.

There are also sessions that deal with making crafts. For example, participants can go into a craft session with four feathers, six and a half red beads, and a small piece of metal—and they’ll come out with a fantastic multi-colored bustle. Instructional sessions are available on ribbon-working, quill-working, wood-working, and roach-making. Opportunities to make Native American crafts from finished products like silver armbands and broaches are also featured.

Opportunities abound in the area of American Indian Activities for Arrowmen who were lucky enough to attend Indian Seminar!
